Requirements

There are three components to the MDCS:

  1. Fundamentals
  2. Leadership and Innovation
  3. Specialization

Each component consists of four half-courses (3 unit per course), for a total requirement of twelve half-courses. Students will generally take fundamental courses in preparation for Leadership courses, but the Specialization options can be done at any time during the program.

Course requirements are:

  1. A minimum of six full courses, including four that are required
  2. At least one required course must be a full-course equivalent in research methods
  3. Two full-course equivalents in the student's area of specialization
  4. One of three possible MDCS exit documents:
    1. exit examination
    2. portfolio
    3. a professionally derived project. Project topics must be agreed upon by the supervisor and student and approved by the CRDS Director.

As part of the preparation of the MDCS exit document, and prior to its evaluation by an examining committee, students must present an early version of their exit document to their peers. This should be an open, interactive, face-to-face or technologically mediated forum, normally in the final term of a student's program. Although not an examination per se, the public presentation is a requirement for convocation.

A sample 2-year program of study is outlined in the following Table.
